The saints vs the gays - a video

Here is a video of the anti-gay protest in Sofia that I wrote about here. The admirers of the guy in the blue shirt can see him for awhile at the very beginning. ;)
I don't know which TV filmed it.

My translation of gems from David,  the boy in the white shirt (definitely some "nationalist" type):
at 0:17-0:39:
Journalist: Why are you protesting today?
David: Because I disagree with the gay perversions in the centre of Sofia next week.  And I wouldn't want things here to become like in America, like in, say, Spain. It's just not normal, that's not a normal country. I want to be normal. That's why I went out to show my position, like all people here
at 1:09 to 1:20, Let them be what they are, but not show it in the street, because if they do it my children will see this thing in 5-10 years from now, and they'll think to themselves, "Oh, it would be good for me to be gay", and my child will go gay in a year or two!

A gem from Slavi, the boy in black shirt and black cap, at 1:36-2:26:  They are using the gay parade to say, "we are repressed and there should be more rights for us", so they'll get civil partnerships and all[...] I am not against the gays, they have to be like that, but not to demonstrate their perversion in front of the society. That is a disease that has to be treated.

Angel, a student of theology, at  2:26: It's not God's will, this is from the devil. If it were God's will, God wouldn't create Eve, a man and a woman.

Don't think that these people are some isolated cases of homophobia. I read things like this, and even worse, at Bulgarian Internet forums, blogs, etc. that are supposed to be about politics* or in comments to news pages.

*The party of the Greens declared that it supports the Rainbow Friendship event (what these people protest against), and even some of the party's supporters are angry with it.

Note for those who are unfamiliar with Eastern Orthodox Christianity: If you are wondering what the saints have to do with the whole thing - they are depicted in the icons those people are carrying. Yes, this version of Christianity has icons in its churches. But this use of the icons to promote homophobia is somewhat original - I guess our homophobes picked it up from the Russian ones who have already established such a "tradition".  The interesting part is that it set some true Christians against them here in Bulgaria. There were quite a few indignant comments to a certain news page about such use of icons to promote hatred.

What is this supposed to mean? :)

He is not a saint, he only carried an icon of some saint. I guess they picked up this "original" use of the icons from the Russian homophobes. The interesting part is that it set some true Christians against them here in Bulgaria. There were quite a few indignant comments to a certain news page about such use of icons to promote hatred.

Hopefully, if there is a gay-friendly parade, it will get at least as much police protection as this one - you can see the police cars following behind at abo0ut 2:14...

Oh, it definitely will because certain "opponents" of gay-friendly events tend to be physically violent. Remember those "subtle" threats on TV?

Here are some photos from last year's pride on a Bulgarian news page 9you can enlarge the photos by clicking on them) Some people were only too happy to get arrested - it gives one a nice martyr image, you know.

And yes, some people threw two Molotov cocktails last year, and the police didn't manage to catch them. Luckily they didn't hurt anyone.

And there is a YouTube video of a certain politician and councillor in the Municipal Council of Sofia saying to one of the organizers of this year's Rainbow Friendship event something like "you are making the Municipality waste money on guarding your unnecessary event"... but he said nothing about the money spent on guarding the anti-gay event. On national TV again. I'll translate some parts of that debate for you if you are interested.

Well, I don't see a video...
(but I don't need to see it, because you translated it, so it must be in your language and I don't understand a word of that anyway) ;-)
I just can't believe some people are so 'oldfashioned' in their way of thinking...

In Holland are lots of Christians, a part of that 'belongs' to the Roman Catholic Church and a part 'belongs' to the Dutch Protestant Church.
In both of these groups are people who are against a lot of things.
Homosexuality, television, lots of musicstyles, their list is endless.
The Bible is the same Bible for all these Christians but it looks like (only a small part) is reading a totaly different Bible... They only think that what they 'believe' is right and everything else or everyone else is very wrong.

We don't live in the year 0, or 1800 or 1850.
A lot has changed, time has changed, even religion(s) changed, new technologics came...
We can't compare things as if it was years ago.

Only some fanatics (religious or non religious) can't accept anything what is different than their own way of thinking...

I can see the video normally (I just tested it) and yes, it's in my language.

Most of the guys at the protest (there were very few women) were those so-called nationalists who use the religion as it suits them. And the real theologists were such medieval types that they were pathetic. Few modern Bulgarians would literally believe in Adam and Eve, and Christ himself didn't say anything at all about homosexuality.

We're a very normal country here in Spain. It took us like a million deaths, but we're very normal. Maybe this guy should ask the large number of gay Bulgarians who live here escaping from idiots like him.

Stupidity is incurable, alas.
